Hunza is a historic valley located in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, nestled in the Karakoram mountain range. Historically, it was an independent princely state ruled by Mir’s (local monarchs) for over 900 years until it was annexed by Pakistan in 1974. The valley was strategically important as it lay on the ancient Silk Road, connecting China and Central Asia to the Indian subcontinent. This position made Hunza a hub for cultural exchange, trade, and the spread of Buddhism, as evidenced by petroglyphs and ancient stupas. Later, Islam became the dominant religion in the region, particularly the Ismaili sect under the spiritual leadership of the Aga Khan.
The Hunza people are known for their unique culture, languages (Burushaski, Wakhi, Shina), and longevity, attributed to their healthy lifestyle and diet. The valley’s historical landmarks include Altit and Baltit Forts, which showcase ancient architecture and provide insights into the region’s past.
